Concrete Hours

An architecture practice wanted its best building photographed honestly. We shot the same stairwell every hour from first light to last and let the building's own light do the editing.

Concrete Hours

The brief

Every previous shoot had photographed the stairwell at noon, when the light is flat and the concrete reads grey and dead. The practice knew the building was better than its pictures but could not say why.

What we did

A single tripod position, held for eleven hours. Fourteen exposures, no lighting, no grade beyond a contrast curve. The board-marking only shows up for about ninety minutes a day.

The result

A fourteen-frame sequence shown as a single print run, and one frame that has since been published in three journals.
